Embracing Imperfection: A Monday Morning Reflection on Personal Transformation
Last week I dropped the ball.
On this bright and shiny Monday morning, I’m reflecting on my choices last week, and I wish I could look back with more pride.
As I’m taking accountability, the option of going into a shame spiral is very appealing.
I could easily spend the morning verbally harassing myself.
I could easily not take my passions seriously, because “what’s the point”?
I could easily call my brother and invite him to my pity party that he does not want to attend.
But I am going to take a different approach.
I’m going to try something crazy.
Bear with me here…
I’m going to meet myself with loving awareness.
It’s CRAZY TALK! I know.
I learned recently there are two types of awareness:
Loving Awareness
Shameful Awareness
Loving awareness is scientifically proven to create change because when we show ourselves compassion, our nervous system feels safe to change.
Shameful awareness, on the other hand, is scientifically proven to keep us stuck because we subconsciously feel “attacked” by ourselves.
It can be a tricky thing because when we mess up we don’t feel worthy of compassion, but these are the moments we need compassion the most.
I once heard a therapist say that even if we don’t feel worthy of compassion, we should show ourselves compassion simply because its the most effective strategy for change.
Last week I didn’t try my hardest. I was so scared of failing that I didn’t even try.
So this Monday morning, I am going to meet that devastation with compassion.
This Monday morning, I am going to hug the part of myself that feels like a loser.
This Monday morning, I am going to have compassion when I notice other people stuck in their own lives.
I like to think that every morning we are made new. Every morning is a fresh start.
We don’t need to stay in the prison of our mistakes.
We can open the door to our self-imposed jail and be the person we’ve always wanted to be.
Keep inspiring,
Nicole
